When God Redirects Your Life: Lessons from Jacob’s Journey

Have you ever been driving with GPS when suddenly “recalculating route” flashes on your screen? In that moment, you realize either you’ve made a wrong turn or your GPS knows something you don’t. God sometimes works similarly in our lives – redirecting us back to where we should be or helping us avoid something dangerous ahead.

What Happens When God Begins to Redirect?

In Genesis 31, we find Jacob at a crossroads after 20 years in Paddan Aram. What started as a journey to find one wife resulted in four wives and twelve children. But now circumstances are changing, and God is beginning to redirect Jacob’s path.

The Signs of Change

Jacob noticed two important things: what he heard and what he saw. His brothers-in-law were complaining that “Jacob has taken away all that was our father’s,” and Laban’s attitude toward him had completely changed. The face that once welcomed him now showed hostility.

This teaches us that sometimes God uses changing circumstances – even difficult ones – to move us in the direction He wants us to go. What Jacob experienced as family tension, God was using as motivation to return to the promised land.

How Does God Speak About Direction?

When God finally spoke to Jacob directly, His message was simple: “Return to the land of your fathers, to your relatives, and I will be with you.” Notice that God didn’t give Jacob a detailed roadmap or remove all obstacles. He simply promised His presence.

Jacob’s Response to God’s Call

Jacob gathered his wives and explained what God was doing. He recounted how God had blessed him despite Laban’s attempts to cheat him, changing his wages ten times. Jacob recognized God’s hand in his prosperity and protection.

His wives’ response was telling: “Do we still have any share or inheritance in our father’s house? Are we not regarded by him as foreigners?” They felt sold and forgotten by their own father. Their answer to Jacob was clear: “Whatever God has told you, do it.”

Why Do We Sometimes Choose Deception Over Trust?

Despite God’s clear direction and his family’s support, Jacob chose to sneak away rather than confront Laban directly. This decision reveals something important about human nature – even when we know God’s will, we sometimes resort to manipulation instead of trusting God’s faithfulness.

The Consequences of Taking Matters Into Our Own Hands

Jacob’s deception created unnecessary drama. Rachel stole her father’s household idols, perhaps thinking this would prevent Laban from following them through divination. But this act of theft would later cause significant problems when Laban pursued them.

The irony is striking – if these gods were so powerless they could be stolen and sat upon, why worship them at all? This contrast highlights the difference between helpless idols and an all-powerful God.

How Can You Recognize God’s Direction in Your Life?

Jacob’s story reveals four key questions we should ask when seeking God’s direction:

What Is God Doing in You?

Before God physically moved Jacob, He began working in Jacob’s heart. Six years earlier, Jacob had wanted to go home but felt coerced to stay. Now his heart was ready. When we delight ourselves in the Lord, our desires begin to align with His plans.

What Is God Doing Around You?

Circumstances had changed dramatically for Jacob. The family dynamics, the attitude of his in-laws, and his position in the household were all different. God can use even difficult circumstances to work together for good for those who love Him.

What Are Others Saying to You?

Jacob wisely consulted his wives before making this major decision. As believers, God has placed us in a community of faith where we can seek counsel from other mature Christians. A wise person listens to godly counsel.

What Is God Saying to You?

Most importantly, God spoke directly to Jacob – not once, but twice. As believers, we have God’s Word as our ultimate authority. The more we read and meditate on Scripture, the easier it becomes to recognize God’s voice.

What Should You Do While Waiting for Direction?

Jacob’s 20-year journey teaches us three important principles:

Wait

Jacob waited two decades for this moment. God’s timing isn’t always our timing, but it’s always perfect. There may be things God knows that we don’t yet understand, preparations He’s making that we can’t see.

Work

Throughout his time with Laban, despite unfair treatment and changing wages, Jacob remained a faithful worker. While waiting for God’s direction, we should be diligent and faithful in our current responsibilities.

Walk Faithfully

Don’t compromise your testimony while growing impatient with God’s timing. Handle your business appropriately and maintain your integrity, even when others around you don’t.

What Does God Promise When He Redirects?

God’s promise to Jacob – “I will be with you” – echoes throughout Scripture. This same promise was given to Isaac, Moses, Joshua, Gideon, David, Jeremiah, and ultimately to all believers through Jesus Christ: “Surely I will be with you always.”

God doesn’t promise to remove all difficulties or give us step-by-step instructions for every decision. But He does promise His presence, and that’s enough.

Life Application

This week, take time to honestly evaluate where you are in your spiritual journey. Are you sensing God might be redirecting your path? Instead of trying to manipulate circumstances or take matters into your own hands, commit to trusting God’s faithfulness and timing.

Consider these questions as you reflect on your current situation:

  1. What desires has God been placing in your heart that align with His Word?
  2. How might God be using your current circumstances, even difficult ones, to move you toward His will?
  3. What godly counsel are you receiving from mature believers in your life?
  4. What is God saying to you through His Word and prayer?

Remember that God’s redirections in our lives aren’t punishments – they’re expressions of His love and faithfulness. He knows the best route for your journey, even when you can’t see what lies ahead. Trust His promise: “I will be with you.”
