Chosen Before Creation: Understanding God’s Design for Your Life
Before God created the entire universe, He did two remarkable things. First, He planned everything with meticulous detail. Second—and this might surprise you—He chose you. This profound truth is found in Ephesians 1:4, which tells us: “He chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before him in love.”
Every Design Requires a Designer
Look around at the world we live in. Everything that exhibits design had a designer behind it. Consider the “Hotel of Doom” in North Korea—the tallest unoccupied building in the world. Construction began in 1987, but it remains incomplete and empty due to improper design, economic problems, and structural issues. Despite billions spent, no one has ever stayed there.
This illustrates an important principle: significant projects require advanced planning and proper design to succeed. The universe is infinitely more complex than any building, yet some believe it came together by accident.
Can Design Exist Without a Designer?
Both Christians and atheists acknowledge design in the universe. The difference is that Christians attribute this design to God, while atheists claim it’s “undesigned design”—a contradiction in terms. That’s like saying “unpainted painting” or “uncooked barbecue” or “hot ice.” These are oxymorons that make no logical sense.
Think about finding a watch in a forest where no human has ever been. Would you believe the watch created itself? That metals somehow magnetized, animals stepped on it, and eventually it became a perfectly functioning timepiece? Of course not! Yet a living organism like a turtle is infinitely more complex than a watch.
How Complex Is God’s Design in You?
The Bible says you are “fearfully and wonderfully made.” Consider your DNA—the programmed coded information in your body. If you took the DNA from your 30 trillion cells and stretched it out, it would reach to the moon and back half a million times!
Your body can fight diseases you don’t even know you have. Your respiratory and digestive systems function automatically. These aren’t accidents—they’re programmed functions designed by an intelligent Creator.
The greater the design, the greater the designer. And living designs require a living designer.
Why Can’t Life Come from Non-Life?
For someone not to believe in God, they must believe that life somehow emerged from non-life—something science has never observed or replicated. The fossil record doesn’t show evolution but rather the sudden appearance of fully-formed species with no transitional forms.
The Cambrian explosion reveals that millions of species appeared suddenly with no evolutionary predecessors. This points to creation with plan and purpose, not random chance.
Did God Really Choose Us Before Creation?
Genesis 1:1 states, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” In Hebrew, the word for God used here is “Elohim”—a plural form indicating the Trinity. The word for “created” is “bara,” meaning to create from nothing.
Before God made anything, He had a plan for everything—including you. He knew that humanity would fall, and He already had a plan to reconcile the world to Himself through Christ.
Why Does It Matter Who the Designer Is?
Not only are we designed, but the Designer’s identity is known. God is eternal—the Alpha and Omega, beginning and end. He exists outside of time and knew you before time began.
While there are thousands of religions in the world, there is only one mediator between God and humanity—Jesus Christ. As Acts 4:12 tells us, there is no other name under heaven by which we can be saved.
Romans 10:13 promises that “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” But it must be the right name—Jesus Christ, the name above every name, to whom every knee will bow and every tongue confess.
Life Application
God chose you in Christ before the creation of the world “to be holy and blameless in his sight in love.” This week, take time to reflect on these questions:
- How does knowing you were chosen by God before creation change how you view your worth and purpose?
- In what areas of your life do you need to acknowledge God as the Designer rather than trying to control everything yourself?
- Have you responded to God’s choice of you by choosing Him through faith in Jesus Christ?
- How might your life look different if you lived each day with the awareness that you are designed with purpose and chosen in love?
Remember, God chose you. The question is: Have you chosen Him?
