Jesus Explains Religion to the Religious Leaders
It is possible to know the Bible, follow religious traditions, and still completely miss Jesus. In Mark chapter 2, the Pharisees confronted Jesus about His disciples plucking grain on the Sabbath, convinced they had caught them breaking God's law. But Jesus pointed out that the disciples had only violated Pharisaical tradition, not Scripture itself. The Pharisees had built so many rules around the Sabbath that they could no longer see its original purpose as a gift from God. Jesus made a stunning claim in response, declaring Himself Lord of the Sabbath and revealing that the entire law had been pointing to Him all along. The Pharisees were not wrong about everything, but they missed the most important thing standing right in front of them. The real question is not whether we believe the right things, but whether we have surrendered to the One who is Lord over all things.
